Tip #7: Turn any PDF into a search engine magnet!

The three most important factors in PDF seach engine rankings are:

1. Keywords
2. Linking
3. Formatting of the PDF

Just like with html pages, the most important thing to remember about optimizing PDF documents is that they must contain keyword-rich text in order to rank highly in the search engines.

With links, make sure some of your keywords are links in the PDF. Those links are outbound links. You also need inbound links, so make sure you link to your pdf on your site. (A good place is from your site map.)

Why this works:

The most obvious reason is that it’s relevant content presented in a search engine friendly way.

PDF optimizing strategies:

• Title page with keyword-rich text
• Use title throughout as a header/footer
• Keywords in section titles/headlines/subheads
• Create a table of contents for any PDF over 10 pages
• Link the PDF to various areas of your site
• Keep file size reasonable (1 MB and lower, if possible)

Format your PDF using software such as Adobe InDesign (previously known asPageMaker), Quark Xpress, and Word. When you export those files into a PDF format, the search engines will be able to read the text.

You can submit PDF documents using the Submit-URL forms as well as the paid-inclusion programs at the major search engines.
